CHAIRMEN of 15 local government areas in Akwa Ibom State, yesterday, received a directive from the state government to build rescue emergency camps in anticipation of flooding.

The directive followed the earlier warning by Nigerian Meteorological Agency, NiMet, of the impending flooding anticipated to occur in 11 states, Akwa Ibom being one of them.

According to a statement, yesterday in Uyo, the 15 councils, which are flood prone are Oron, Udung Uko, Mbo, Urue Offong/Oruko, Okobo, Ibeno, Eket, Esit Eket, and Onna.

Other councils that received the directive according to the statement were Ikot Abasi, Mkpat Enin, Eastern Obolo, Uruan, Ibiono Ibom and Itu.

According to the statement, the State Emergency Management Agency, SEMA and Ministry of Environment team led by Mrs. Ekaette Ekanem, Director of Administration, SEMA during sensitization campaign in Itu, said that building emergency camps was important as it would help accommodate victims in the advent of a flood disaster.

It added that the state government was working towards providing relief materials to victims of flooding that would be identified by the council authorities during the emergency.
